In September 2024, Oriel Myrddin teamed up with Gŵyl Crefft Cymru and Craft Festival Wales to curate a contemporary craft trail across venues in Cardigan. The trail showcased new work by six makers, each responding to artworks from the National Contemporary Art Gallery of Wales.
for this work I drew inspiration from Graham Sutherland’s "Three Organic Forms" from his portfolio "A Bestiary and Some Correspondences." In response, I created a woven column that reflects Cardigan’s rich civic heritage, particularly its agricultural and maritime industries. This work playfully explores the relationship between materiality, form, and time, blending historical context with contemporary craft.
Prep sketches stashed in chests,
brick braced by the weight of paint.
A relay begins,
Maker making maker.
Rap and rand, the column
stands on Teifi Wharf, Albion, Cymru.
Sounding the span
from Sutherland to Three Organic Forms.
The public seeks new fuel for the fire.
A basket, a beacon, a bed of grasses—
The trail leads to the tavern
and a formal study of rot.
